The classic day
Morning for the Hells: the sightseeing springs too hot to touch - a cobalt pond, a blood-red one, a geyser on a timer - strung along the Kannawa district where steam-cooked lunch (jigoku-mushi) uses the ground itself as the kitchen. Afternoon for the real thing: buried to the neck in naturally heated sand at Takegawara, then a rotenburo with bay views as the light goes.
The pairing
Over the pass, Yufuin offers the counterpoint - galleries, a lake, boutique ryokan under Mount Yufu. Selling the two as one onsen chapter gives clients both spectacle and serenity, and gives the itinerary its exhale between Kyushu’s cities.

Beppu or Yufuin - which onsen town should the itinerary hold?
Different registers: Beppu is scale, steam and spectacle - a working spa city; Yufuin is boutique, artsy and quiet under Mount Yufu. Couples often prefer Yufuin's lanes; families and first-timers get more from Beppu's variety. The pass between them takes under an hour, so one night in each is the connoisseur route.
Are the Hells for bathing?
No - they are for viewing: cobalt-blue Umi Jigoku, blood-red Chinoike, the Tatsumaki geyser. The bathing happens elsewhere - sand burial at Takegawara, mud pools at Hoyoland, and hundreds of neighbourhood baths. We build the day as Hells in the morning, bathing in the afternoon.
How does Beppu fit a Kyushu circuit?
As the eastern anchor: Fukuoka in, Beppu-Yufuin for the onsen chapter, then south to Kumamoto-Kagoshima or back across. Two nights carries the essentials; three lets the bathing become the holiday.
