Early August brings Tanabata, Japan's grandest star-festival, when the arcades fill with ten-metre paper streamers - book a year out. Autumn colour arrives weeks before Kyoto; winter opens the Zao snow-monster and onsen circuit nearby.

Sendai is the door to the Japan most itineraries never reach: Tohoku, the deep north of samurai legacies, mountain temples and coastlines - ninety minutes from Tokyo by shinkansen and a world away in visitor density. The city itself, rebuilt green and easy after the war, is the comfortable base the region lacked.
The two-day core
Day one: the Date Masamune circuit - Zuihoden’s ornate mausoleum, the castle-hill statue over the city - and a gyutan grilled-beef-tongue dinner, Sendai’s proud local table. Day two: Matsushima Bay, cruising the pine islands and walking Zuiganji, back in time for the arcades. In winter, swap or add the Zao ropeway for the frost-covered snow monsters.
The honest positioning
Sendai will not out-monument Kyoto and should not be sold to first-timers instead of it. Its job is different: giving second visits somewhere real to go, giving peak-season itineraries breathing room, and giving agents a region where every site still feels discovered rather than queued for.

What is the Matsushima day actually like?
Forty minutes by local train, then a bay cruise among 260 pine-topped islands, Zuiganji's cedar avenue and gold-leafed halls, and oysters in season. As one of Japan's official three great views it delivers the classic-print scenery clients recognize without knowing why.
How many nights make a Tohoku extension work?
Two Sendai nights carry the essentials: city and gyutan evening, Matsushima day, and either Yamadera's cliff temple or - in winter - the Zao snow monsters. Committed itineraries add Hiraizumi or a Sanriku coast day and stretch to three or four.
